Before your facelift procedure, preparation is critical. That includes using sunscreen to protect your face.

In South Florida, it can be difficult to avoid exposing your face to the sun. However, protecting your face will help you maintain the results of your facelift. UV light from the sun accelerates the aging process, leading to age spots, lines, and wrinkles. It’s particularly important to avoid sun exposure during the first few weeks after your facelift. During that time, your healing skin will be especially sensitive to the sun. Sunlight can also cause your healing incisions to discolor, making them more visible.

If you haven’t started your surgery, it’s helpful to get in the habit of wearing sunscreen everyday; choose one with an SPF of at least 30. A combination product, such as a moisturizer that contains sunscreen, can make it easy to remember to apply. You can further protect your face from damaging UV rays by wearing a hat while outdoors, putting on sunglasses and minimizing time spent outside between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun is at its most intense.

Do you look in the mirror and see an aging face that does not reflect how you feel inside? As you age, your skin loses elasticity, wrinkles develop and facial tissue loses its youthful fullness. This process can start as early as your 30s. With advances in facial cosmetic surgery, Dr. Nathan Nachlas is able to help his patients achieve natural results. Specifically, his patients enjoy a more youthful appearance that helps them look as good on the outside as they feel on the inside.

This is a 55-year-old female with significant loss of skin elasticity and jowl formation. Facial cosmetic surgery restored a more youthful appearance to her neck and jaw line.

Dr. Nachlas stresses natural and subtle cosmetic procedures, which enhance rather than change one’s appearance. In his years of extensive training and experience in facial plastic surgery, Dr. Nachlas has developed advanced techniques for creating natural-looking results. He will work closely with you to determine treatment options that match your individual needs. As with all elective surgery, good health and realistic expectations are a must.

Successful facial plastic surgery is a result of a good rapport between patient and surgeon. Because each patient is different, your treatment plan should be customized for you. Dr. Nachlas will spend a good deal of time with you, discussing your procedure, your questions, and your goals in order to develop this individualized treatment plan.

No one wants to look older than they feel, but sometimes your face ages faster than you would like. The Florida sun, repeated facial expressions and genetics all contribute to skin wrinkles. By your 40’s or 50’s, these wrinkles can alter your face’s appearance. To maintain your youthful face, Dr. Nathan Nachlas and his Boca Raton practice offer the minimal-downtime facelift, which can rejuvenate your face with natural-looking results.

Dr. Nachlas is a double-board-certified facial plastic surgeon. He trained at the renowned Yale-New Haven Hospital and Johns Hopkins Hospital. In addition, Dr. Nachlas earned a prestigious facial plastic surgery fellowship in Beverly Hills. During his extensive training, he learned advanced techniques in facial plastic surgery. His surgical skill is matched by the high level of personal attention he provides to each of his facial cosmetic surgery patients. It’s no wonder, then, that patients travel from West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale to see Dr. Nachlas.

Minimal-Downtime Facelift: Different In A Good Way

A minimal-downtime facelift, while a more limited procedure than the usual facelift, yields beautiful results.

Minimal-downtime facelift surgery addresses many of the same concerns that traditional facelift surgery does. The difference? Smaller and fewer incisions. This approach to facelift surgery is best suited for: 1) people with more moderate skin sagging and 2) those who would like a more limited procedure that still yields beautiful results.

The minimal-downtime facelift involves making short incisions. These incisions are made in front of and occasionally behind your ears. Don’t worry: They should not disrupt the hairline. Next, underlying facial tissue is repositioned and muscles are tightened, creating a more youthful foundation for your skin. Then, excess sagging or lax skin is removed. Finally, the skin is repositioned and held in place with tiny sutures. The result is firmer, lifted cheeks, smoother skin, and a sculpted, youthful-looking jaw line.

Dr. Nachlas performs minimal-downtime facelift surgery as an outpatient procedure, using general anesthesia for optimal patient comfort. The surgery typically takes 1 to 1.5 hours. The exception is if it is being performed in conjunction with other procedures such as eyelid surgery or nose surgery. Many patients find their minimal-downtime facelift results can be enhanced with injectable fillers. Dr. Nachlas’ practice in Boca Raton offers these as well.

Minimal-Downtime Facelift:   Recovery and Results

Dr. Nachlas will bandage your face overnight; minimal swelling is typical. He will make sure that you have prescription pain medication in case you need it to manage your discomfort. Over several weeks, Dr. Nachlas will monitor your recovery closely, and will let you know as soon as you can resume normal activities. Most patients typically return to work within 1 week.

Rhinoplasty is an exciting option for enhancing both the appearance and function of your nose. As a rhinoplasty specialist in Boca Raton, Dr. Nathan Nachlas understands that small changes in your nose’s appearance can have a big impact on your self-image. Add to that the important role the nose plays in breathing, and it’s clear that your nose surgery should be performed only by a highly experienced nose specialist. Dr. Nachlas has performed over 3,000 nose surgeries, all the while maintaining a remarkable patient satisfaction rate (read patient testimonials here).

Rhinoplasty Surgery: Do I Want Closed or Open?

At Dr. Nachlas’ office in Boca Raton, rhinoplasty can:

  • make the nose smaller, larger, narrower, or wider
  • change the angle or shape of the tip of the nose
  • remove a bump in nose
  • fix a crooked nose
  • correct any number of cosmetic concerns

Functional concerns, such as blockages or deformities which may affect breathing, drainage, and sense of smell, and may cause discomfort, can also be corrected by combining rhinoplasty and sinus surgery. Each rhinoplasty is unique, and Dr. Nachlas discusses in this blog different rhinoplasty procedures to help you determine which approach will result in the most natural looking, proportional nose for your face.

Open vs Closed Rhinoplasty

When patients visit Dr. Nachlas’s practice in Boca Raton for rhinoplasty, many already know which changes they would like made. Some changes can be made through a closed rhinoplasty, which is performed via incisions in the nostrils. Other nose surgeries require the open approach, which involves an incision under the tip of the nose. Dr. Nachlas will assess your nasal septum and turbinates, as well as evaluate your sinuses if needed. Dr. Nachlas will recommend the appropriate surgery to help you get the best aesthetic and functional rhinoplasty results.

With great experience in both closed rhinoplasty and open rhinoplasty, Dr. Nachlas will help you choose which approach best fits your goals and needs.

Open Rhinoplasty Approach

As an experienced nose surgeon, Dr. Nathan Nachlas understands that even minor modifications to the nose can have a noticeable influence on the overall appearance of the face. Changing the width or length of your nose, narrowing the nostrils, or eliminating a prominent bump can bring your nose into harmony with other facial features and enhance your natural beauty significantly. As a nose specialist, Dr. Nachlas will evaluate all structures of your nose prior to recommending nose surgery. These structures include the bones and cartilage of the outside of the nose, as well as the septum, sinuses and turbinates inside the nose. Having nose surgery in Boca Raton with Dr. Nachlas will help you look and feel your best.

Open rhinoplasty requires an incision across the columella (the vertical strip of tissue separating the nostrils). This approach offers Dr. Nachlas the best access to the interior structures of the nose, as opposed to closed rhinoplasty, which is better suited for more limited procedures. The scar that results from open rhinoplasty is small and well concealed on the underside of the base of the nose. Over time, this scar typically fades to become nearly invisible.

Typically, general anesthesia is required for an open rhinoplasty procedure, but Dr. Nachlas will discuss anesthesia options for your particular surgery. The surgical time for an open rhinoplasty typically ranges from 1 to 4 hours, depending on the extent of the changes required.

Closed Rhinoplasty Approach

Closed rhinoplasty is nose surgery that is performed using incisions inside the nostrils, as opposed to open rhinoplasty which is done through a small incision along the underside of the tip of the nose. This approach to nose surgery has several advantages, including incisions that are totally hidden within the nose, shorter surgical time, and a generally quicker and more comfortable recovery.

Options for reshaping the nose include removing a hump, altering the tip of the nose, narrowing the bridge or nostrils, or any combination that results in the right nose for your face. Not all nasal surgeries can be performed using the closed technique, and Dr. Nachlas will discuss with you whether this is an option for your procedure.

Closed rhinoplasty is usually performed under general anesthesia, though in some cases local anesthesia can be used. Dr. Nachlas can achieve excellent results through this scarless approach.

Recovery varies for rhinoplasty patients, depending on age, skin consistency, the extent of the surgery, and whether this is a primary rhinoplasty or a revision rhinoplasty procedure. The nose will be splinted to help it heal properly in its new shape, and may be packed with gauze in some cases. Most patients will experience some mild swelling, bruising, and nasal stuffiness for the first few days after surgery, but find they can return to work in about a week. Nose surgery usually requires about a week of recovery time off of work. The nose will be splinted after surgery to help it retain its new shape while it heals. Mild bruising, swelling and stuffiness are common after rhinoplasty, but cold compresses and medication should provide relief from these discomforts. Although you can resume light activities after approximately a week, changes in the shape of the nose will take place over several months.

One way to extend the life of your facelift is to look closely at your diet. The healthier your diet is, the more likely that your facelift results will be lengthy. Try to steer clear of eating a lot of sugar, as it leads to the production of advanced glycation end-products, which can play a part in the aging of your skin. Instead of sugary foods, try to eat foods with nutrients and vitamins, such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains and lean meats. Here are several facelift-boosting foods:

Facelift Boosting Foods

Avocados and grapefruit can extend the life of your facelift.

  • Spinach, like many other dark green leafy vegetables, is rich in an antioxidant called lutein. Spinach is good for preventing facelift-damaging wrinkles by helping to retain the face’s moisture and elasticity, increasing lipid levels and preventing damage caused by free radicals. In addition, spinach has the power to reduce dark circles under the eyes due to its high levels of Vitamins K and C. Diets high in Vitamins K and C increase circulation and strengthen capillary walls.
  • Oysters, clams and mussels are high in Vitamin B12 and iron. Your facelift gets a boost from these vitamins, as they stave off anaemia and combat pasty skin.
  • Garlic can safeguard your facelift, too. Particularly when eaten raw or crushed, garlic can reduce future acne breakouts, while its anti-inflammatory properties can reduce the swelling and inflammation of acne.
  • Avocados are a treat for your facelift. They moisturize your skin from the inside and increase collagen production, helping to prevent wrinkles. The high levels of Vitamin E keep your skin supple and prevent premature aging.
  • Bananas, strawberries, melon and papaya prevent fluid retention, a primary cause of a puffy face and bags under the eyes. When your body’s sodium/potassium balance is off, fluid retention increases. Increase your intake of potassium-rich foods like bananas.

Rhinoplasty surgery for your teen gives your teen more than good looks — it gives your teen self-confidence. If your teen has difficulty breathing, ??the surgery? can be combined with ??sinus? surgery or with ?septoplasty? to correct physical problems in your teen’s nose.

Smoking can reverse your facelift results.

Although a facelift focuses on the external features of your face, smoothing out sagginess and easing the appearance of lines and creases, what you put inside your body plays an important part in how well the surgical results hold up.

Smoking or using tobacco is one way to speed up the aging process and quickly reverse facelift results. The nicotine in cigarettes and other forms of tobacco disrupts blood flow. Decreased blood circulation in your skin keeps it from getting the nutrients it needs to stay youthful looking and smooth. Smoking also destroys the collagen in the dermal layer of the skin. Without collagen, your skin is more likely to sag or droop, since nothing is there to hold it up.

If you do smoke, you usually get a jumpstart on quitting before surgery, as most surgeons–including Dr. Nachlas–strongly advise quitting at least two weeks before a facelift procedure. Quitting before surgery and remaining smoke-free for at least two weeks afterwards cuts your risk for complications and helps your body heal more quickly after the surgery. Quitting is tough, but Dr. Nachlas can provide guidance to help you through it and to help you stay away from tobacco after your facelift procedure.

It’s important to choose the right time in your teen’s life for rhinoplasty.

Scheduling rhinoplasty surgery for your teen? Minimize the impact on your teen’s life by scheduling the rhinoplasty surgery during a period of transition in his or her life. The best time is the summer between high school and college, since your teen is off from school and is about to start a new life in a place where few, if any, people know him or her.

If college is still a long way off, the summer can still be a great time for rhinoplasty surgery, provided your teen isn’t the outdoors type. A number of summertime activities, including swimming, lying out on the beach and playing sports, will be off-limits after the rhinoplasty surgery. For that reason, winter break is also an ideal time for your teen’s surgery. Your teen will have a chance to recover somewhat before he or she goes back to school. He or she will likely need to sit out gym class for some time, though.

Although your teen may want nose surgery now, the nose might not be ready.

If your teen approaches you about rhinoplasty surgery, know that age matters. Dr. Nachlas recommends waiting until your teen’s nose has fully grown before having any nasal surgery. If your teenager has the surgery and the nose continues to grow, the results of the surgery can be negatively affected. Most teens are finished growing by age 16, although boys might continue to grow until age 18.

Recovering Comfortably After Cosmetic SurgeryRecovery and downtime are part of the facial plastic surgery journey. Your new nose or younger-looking face won’t be instantly visible. Your body needs time to heal. Usually, the initial recovery period lasts about a week or two. After that, your surgeon will most likely give you permission to head back to work or to resume certain activities.

Taking up to two weeks off to rest and recuperate might not seem like much fun. But, with some careful planning, you can make your recovery period a comfortable and possibly even enjoyable one.

Stock Up on Soft, Bland Foods

Chewing might be a challenge after you have a rhinoplasty or other facial surgery. You don’t want to move your jaw too much or you risk disturbing the sutures or affecting the results of the procedure. Get your kitchen and pantry ready for your recovery time by stocking up on easy to swallow, soft foods beforehand. Canned or boxed soups are great to have, because they are filling and easy to prepare.

Your surgeon might recommend sticking with liquids for the first few hours after your surgery. After that, light meals are recommended. If you feel very hungry after your procedure, it’s usually okay to eat, but check with your surgeon before you have a big, full meal.

Pick Out a Good Chair

Although you’ll be able to walk around within the first few days after your procedure, having a great chair to relax in can help make the recovery a bit more comfortable. Since keeping your head elevated after a facelift or other facial surgery is recommended, to keep swelling and bruising down, picking out a chair that reclines slightly while keeping the head propped up is usually optimal: something like a La-Z-Boy or other recliner so that you have a comfortable seat to settle into.

Stock Up on Pillows

Pillows can be your best friend during your recovery period. Usually, surgeons recommend sleeping with your head elevated, lying on your back. A few pillows can give you just the right amount of lift to keep bruising to a minimum. If you’re not used to sleeping on your back, putting a few pillows along each side of you can help keep you from rolling over to your side or stomach in your sleep. It can also be comforting to hold a pillow as you sit and relax. You can really  never have too many pillows.

Take It Easy

A big part of the recovery process after a facelift is relaxing and taking it easy. Admittedly, that can be difficult to do, especially if you are usually an active person. Instead of thinking about the things you can’t do while you recuperate, think of the things you’ll finally get around to doing. The first few days after surgery are a great time to listen to your favorite music, catch up on your favorite shows or see films you missed. If you’ve had eyelid surgery, now’s a great time to catch up with audiobooks or to listen to popular podcasts.

Don’t Forget the Ice

Ice packs or cold compresses can help reduce swelling and bruising. They also feel a bit soothing. You can make up a few ice packs before your procedure to have ready afterwards, using ice cubes and plastic bags. A less messy option is to soak a washcloth in cold water, wring it out and freeze it for about 15 minutes. The cloth will be cold enough to do the trick, but won’t leak all over the place when the ice starts melting. You can also buy first aid ice packs, which become cold without the need for freezing them.

Recovery Starts Before Surgery

Ideally, preparation for your recovery period should begin several weeks before you even have surgery, right around the time of your consultation. Your surgeon will most likely recommend some lifestyle changes to you, if needed, such as quitting smoking. You might be told to cut back on alcoholic beverages, as well.

It’s also a good idea to start eating a healthy diet in advance of your surgery. The better you eat, the better prepared your body will be to handle the recovery period. Fill up on foods that are packed with nutrients, such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains and lean meats. Talk to your surgeon if you have any questions about diet and nutrition before the surgery.
