Signs of aging on your face can not only make you look older. In some cases, they can also make you look angrier or more upset. The glabellar lines, which form between the eyebrows, have earned the nickname “frown lines” for a reason. They make you look as though you’re frowning, even when you’re perfectly content.
Having an angry looking face as you get older doesn’t have to be your lot in life, though. A number of procedures, both surgical and minimally invasive, can help you look more refreshed, more youthful and a bit happier.
As you get older, your lips are likely to lose volume, as the body starts to produce less collagen. A loss of volume in the lips doesn’t just make them look thinner. It can also make them turn down slightly at the corners, so you look like you’re frowning.
While surgical options are available to permanently enhance the volume of your lips, a quick and nearly painless option is to use a filler to plump them up. One filler that works well in the lips is Restylane. It’s currently the only hyaluronic acid fillers approved by the FDA to add volume to the lip area.
Restylane offers a number of advantages. Treatment is usually very quick and discomfort is minimal. The needle used is very fine and some formulations include lidocaine, which numbs the area. Results are visible right after treatment, though there is a chance of some swelling, which can make your lips look fuller than they really are. In most cases, you’ll be able to get back to your routine right away.
The results from Restylane don’t last forever, which means if you are unhappy with them, you can just wait for them to wear off. In many cases, the results last for about six months. If you like them, you can have a repeat treatment. Over time, you may need fewer and fewer injections to get the same results.
Those pesky frown lines might be what everyone thinks of when they think of having a naturally upset-looking face. Fortunately, those pesky frown lines are relatively easy to deal with. The first thing Botox Cosmetic received FDA approval for was treating the glabellar lines, also sometimes called the “11s,” too.
Frown lines form thanks to repeated muscle movements and the effects of aging on your skin. As you move certain parts of your face, the skin moves, too. Once the collagen and elastin in the skin starts breaking down, as a result of time and damage from external factors like the sun, lines begin to form. At first, the lines only appear when you move the related muscles. But, as the lines become more etched in the skin, they remain visible even when your face is relaxed.
Botox helps reduce the lines by blocking the signal sent from the nerve to the respective muscles. Contrary to popular belief, the treatment doesn’t freeze the face or keep all of the muscles from moving. You’ll still be able to laugh, smile, and if need be, frown. Only the muscles responsible for the lines are affected.
Unlike a filler, Botox needs some time to work. It can take up to a week for you to see results. Usually, the treatment lasts for three months or so. If you liked the results, you can see your doctor for an additional treatment.
You may need a more involved procedure to make your face reflect the way you feel on the inside. A brow lift is a considerably more invasive procedure than Botox. But, it also does a lot more than Botox. While injections only treat the frown lines, a brow lift can help restore a forehead or brow area that’s saggy, droopy or that has a great number of lines across it. A brow lift can raise lowered brows that make you look as though you’re scowling or frowning.
The surgery involves removing excess skin from the area, as well as trimming excess, loose muscle that is contributing to the droopiness. Your surgeon can perform the procedure endoscopically, which only requires a few small incisions, or he or she can perform a traditional procedure, which requires a longer incision.
