Surgery can only do so much to improve the way a person looks. Conditions like acne, rosacea, hyperpigmentation, sun damage, and enlarged pores will not go away with a lift or liposuction. To feel their best, patients may need a combination of procedures. The outcome of a surgery may be able to be enhanced through specially designed treatments for the skin.
Facial plastic surgery procedures can certainly help a patient look more youthful, but a good deal of how good the results are depends on how well the person is willing to take care of their new appearance. Dr. Nachlas works alongside Carol Maguire, Licensed Clinical Paramedical Aesthetician, to create the best results for his patients. That facelift will stand out even more after reducing the effects of sun damage. Acne treatments, facials, microdermabrasion, resurfacing with non-ablative or ablative lasers, and chemical peels may be able to be performed in conjunction with, or following, facial rejuvenation surgery.
There are other tips you can follow at home to ensure that your skin remains bright and healthy. Surgery is traumatic to the skin, but the proper steps will help it heal just fine.
- Do not touch the skin at the surgical site. Swelling, bruising, redness, minor pain, and even itching are normal. Scratching or rubbing the area may cause further damage, including infection. It can be hard not to touch, but you will not need to worry about needing an additional procedure to remove scars or pits in the skin.
- Drink plenty of fluids, especially water. Well-hydrated skin heals faster than dry skin. Dehydration can also slow the immune system. Drinking 8 glasses of water a day is ideal.
- Practice good sun protection. The skin may be very sensitive to sunlight following surgery. Limit sun exposure by staying out of direct light. Always use a broadband sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or 40 that protects against UVA and UVB radiation. Higher SPFs may block pores.
Following any procedure, it is important to continue to follow a quality skincare regimen with the right projects. Hypoallergenic cleaners and moisturizers will leave you with soft, healthy skin. Dr. Nachlas has his own skincare line, available at the practice, in addition to other proven brands that he recommends.
